Undoing "Be With" Prayers

Sat, 12/22/2012 - 1:36pm -- Rob

Do you know what I often hear prayed?  Prayers that contain, "Lord, be with ________."

You may hear it prayed too, or maybe it is something you commonly pray.

I hear it often from Christians at church, on the street, and in other places I pray. But what does it mean? Why is it prayed? How Biblical is this type of request? Let's take a look.

The Attributes of God

Tue, 03/20/2012 - 8:35am -- Rob

The Attributes of God

1. You are God our Creator: You have made everything. We worship you.

2. You are the Only God: You are the Lord and there is no other apart from you.

3. You are Almighty God: You are mighty O Lord. There is none like you.

4. You are the Everlasting Father, The Ancient of Days: You are, have been, and will always be.

5. You are a Loving God. Your very nature is love.

6. You are a God of Justice. You are just and justify those who have faith in you.

Transforming Prayer

Sun, 02/05/2012 - 3:38pm -- Rob

There are many books on the subject of prayer on the market today. Some books exhort Christians to pray with greater sincerity, bigger expectations of God, or simply to set aside more time each day to push through personal prayer lists.

While there are helpful tips and tidbits in many of these books, I've found few that have instructed me HOW to pray in a manner that creates greater intimacy with God- one of the great purposes of prayer to begin with!

Timing Your Prayers

Tue, 12/06/2011 - 10:39am -- Rob

Years ago, I came across a website that struck my fancy. It's www.time.gov. It's a neat little tool I now use to target the timing of my prayers (more about this later).

The website first asks the user to click on a map- in order to choose a time zone.

Once a time zone is chosen, the page refreshes and shows the exact time and date. But the really cool thing about this page is what shows up beneath the time and date...

The Health of Your House of Prayer

Mon, 08/29/2011 - 7:17am -- Rob

What's the health of your house of prayer? Is it clean, organized, consistent, and deep-abiding? Is it momentary, scattered, spur-of-the-moment, easily distracted; maybe non-existent?

There are two common houses of prayer referred to in the New Testament. One is the church or temple, commonly known as the house of prayer.

And as he (Jesus) taught them, he said, "Is it not written: "'My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations'? But you have made it 'a den of robbers.'" -Mark 11:17

The Way It Is Isn't How It Has To Remain

Mon, 06/27/2011 - 11:25am -- Rob

In a busy culture and lifestyle, it's often easiest to leave difficult circumstances, relationships, and matters to others rather than stopping and lending a hand or taking a few moments to pray.

When this happens for a lengthy period of time, it's easy to distance oneself from the needy, helpless, or unfortunate. "That's the way it is" can become an attitude within one who would rather not lend a personal hand or prayer to change the circumstances another is affected by. Over time, as others are neglected, the problem or concern grows.

Pray Wherever You're At!

Tue, 06/21/2011 - 10:47pm -- Rob

Linda began learning about prayer walking when Sarah, her 21 year-old granddaughter, left to begin a 9-month study trip in Spain. As Linda continued to learn how easy it was to pray for people wherever she was, she thought about Sarah- and what she could accomplish in prayer while she was in Spain.

One day, Linda called her granddaughter to see how she was doing. While they spoke, Linda asked Sarah if she would pray for God to touch people she encountered in Spain.

Mapping Prayer

Tue, 05/31/2011 - 11:01am -- Rob

If you're someone who is looking for a fresh or different way to pray for people in your country or in other countries, I suggest you download Google Earth to your computer.

Once you've downloaded the free software, open it and type the name of your city into the search box and hit enter.

You'll see the picture of the globe zoom in to your city- to the point where you'll see streets and locations therein.

Take a moment to pray for neighbors, businesses, and people you know who live on some of those streets.

Joining Him

Wed, 05/11/2011 - 9:04pm -- Rob

Often in our day, prayer is thought of the way of getting something from God.  While prayer exists to request things and results from God, I like how John F. DeVries, in his book, Why Pray?, defines prayer.  “God intended prayer to be the means by which we join with Him in His work of redeeming the world.”
