The Friend We Have in Jesus-1

Do you know that it’s possible to use words in a song or hymn to spark your prayers?

What a friend we have in Jesus
All our sins and griefs to bear
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!

Oh, what peace we often forfeit
Oh, what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!

These are the words of the classic hymn of our faith, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.”

There are many poignant truths throughout this first verse, like, Jesus is our Friend. Jesus bears all our sins and griefs. It’s a privilege to go to God with everything (every joy, concern, worry, grief, struggle, challenge big or small; everything). We forfeit peace and take on needless burdens (emotional, spiritual, and physical pains) when we try to solve problems on our own. But all of it can change in a hurry, if we carry the situation, and all things, to God in prayer.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, bring to my attention truths about God and all that He makes available to me every day through Himself. Make these truths about God real to me, and fill me with Your joy. Amen.

Read through the words of the hymn again, and jot down different names of God. Some examples: Friend, Jesus, grief bearer, sin bearer, etc. You can read between the lines too for additional names (that’s how we came up with sin-bearer and grief-bearer).

Next, read through again and jot down benefits God brings you through prayer. Some examples: He carries everything, Jesus is our Friend, etc.

Now, take your lists of names, and the benefits He brings, and thank God individually for each one. You can simply start out by saying, “Lord, thank you for being my friend,” then continue on through the others in similar fashion.

If you find yourself struggling to believe one or more of the things you’re praying/thanking Him for, stop and ask God to help make that truth real in your heart and life. As your Friend, He’ll gladly meet you where you’re at!
