Scripture is clear that we are to pray in many ways for our leaders and those in authority. There’s blessing and hope for a nation whose people heed this call.
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.— 1 Timothy 2:1-4
While many Christians faithfully pray for our nation and its leaders, there’s something special and unique about praying on site in our nation’s capitol. Whenever and wherever we pray on site, God reveals truths about matters that we won’t hear about in the news or from other sources of information. That was very much the case for the small prayer team from Indianapolis that I had the privilege of traveling with for three days in late July!
Changes Large and Small in Washington D.C.
Our team met with a former member of the House of Representatives who now serves with the D. James Kennedy Center for Christian Statesmanship on Capitol Hill. He shared that over 140 lawmakers (in the House and Senate combined) are strong, biblically-minded Christians; many of whom regularly attend or participate in weekly Bible studies held on Capitol Hill. That’s over 25% of our representatives in Washington! Many others on the Hill are professing Christians. And still others eagerly attend Bible studies because they are curious what Scripture says about how they are to live and lead.
We also learned about a representative who attended a training on how to share one’s faith in Jesus Christ. The day after the training, he applied that training during a meeting with a fellow representative. That representative accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior– right on the Hill!
Lastly, we learned about other Bible studies, including a weekly one in the White House. Our source stated that he believes that it’s been over 100 years since a Bible study has been regularly held there!
Continue in Prayer
Although it’s sometimes tempting to throw up one’s arms in disgust about political matters, one of the things I’ve brought back with me from this prayer trip is that many of us are seeing our prayers for this nation, and our leaders, answered! There’s an increasing openness to God’s Word, and a gradual, growing desire to lead our nation accordingly. I’m praying differently for our nation than I’ve prayed before. Specifics matter to God when we pray! Having a greater first-hand knowledge of how He’s working on Capitol Hill only sharpens my desire and practice of prayer for our nation and leaders.
Lastly, let me encourage you to pray specifically for your state senators and representatives on Capitol Hill. If you don’t know them by name, look them up and read about their backgrounds. Chances are, if you don’t know who your representatives are, you’re likely not praying for them. Prayer makes a significant difference in the lives of individuals we send to Washington, as well as our nation as a whole!
